Over half a million pesos is up for grabs as Iloilo launches this year’s search for outstanding local government units (LGUs) in the field of ecological and sustainable waste management.
Dubbed “E+3S,” the competition is part of the Iloilo Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office’s (PENRO) efforts to inspire LGUs to comply with the provisions of Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Mitzi Peñaflorida, senior environmental management specialist of PENRO-Iloilo, said that the search is also a way for them to check on participating LGU’s solid waste management programs, and thus urged all LGUs in the province to participate.
“Former Governor Arthur Defensor Sr. saw that by recognizing LGUs, our solid waste management programs can be sustained,” she said.
PENRO Iloilo together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of the Interior and Local Government, and other entities will rate participating LGUs based on environmental organization, education, engineering, enforcement, economic sustainability, pollution control, health and sanitation, and urban greening. The assessment, which started yesterday, will also consider the performance of each LGUs’ municipal solid waste management board and the effectiveness of its community awareness program, among others.
The winning LGU will receive Php300,000 cash prize; the second placer, Php200,000; and the third placer, Php150,000. (RAF/LMO)
