Persons with disabilities (PWDs) could soon have an exclusive parking space in Cebu City.
The above is provided for in a proposed ordinance filed by Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr., which requires government offices, private business centers, schools, and hospitals in Cebu City to provide these exclusive spaces.
Gabuya said that he filed the ordinance after a group of PWDs approached him and requested exclusive parking slots in public spaces.
There is an existing law on parking lanes for PWDs, but most private and public institutions in the city, including the city hall, do not have parking spaces for physically disabled people.
“It is high time for us to strictly implement this law. The parking slots must also be located near the ramps to allow easy access of PWDs from the vehicle to the building, and vice versa,” Gabuya said in Cebuano.
The councilor noted that the designated parking spaces for PWDs are different from the specific slots for senior citizens.
Gabuya assured that the city government will strictly implement the ordinance once it is approved as Mayor Edgardo Labella has urged compliance with all laws.
