MANILA, Philippines – Extended operating hours of MRT-3? MRT operators reveal on Thursday that transport authorities are considering the extension in November and December to help lighten traffic in EDSA.
“One consideration. Pinag-aaralan namin ang extension ng oras, baka kakailanganin (We are looking into extending operating hours, if needed),” MRT-3 Director Michael Capati shared in a press conference.
Capati added that replacement of old tracks will begin by November, from 11 pm to 3 am daily. The rehabilitation of the MRT started in May 2019 and is expected to end by July 2021.
The extension proposal will be discussed with maintenance service provider Sumitomo Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and TES Philippines.
Capati explained that extending operating hours could reduce rehabilitation time by one hour. “Pag-aaralan namin, kasi baka mamaya aprubahan namin, ang magiging epekto naman, bawas ng isang oras sa pag-rehabilitate ng riles. Eh ‘yun ang priority na’tin kaysa doon sa pag-extend,” he said. (We’ll look into that because it will lessen rehabilitation time by one hour. Rehabilitation is a higher priority compared to extending operating hours.) (HGBH/LMO)
