President Rodrigo Duterte has signed Republic Act 11369 declaring November 17 of every year as National Students’ Day. The celebration recognizes student activism in the country.
The day of observance is seen as an opportunity to recognize the “invaluable contribution of student activism to Philippine democracy” and for “initiating efforts to foster leadership among Filipino students.”
An annual celebration is set to observe the said day. The National Youth Commission serves as the lead agency to prepare and implement a program of activities. The Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education are mandated to support the NYC in all efforts to facilitate and promote related activities in all public and private schools.
The law further encourages all schools, colleges, and universities to fully support the exercises and activities launched by students during the observance of National Students’ Day.
The president’s declaration aligns with other countries’ observance of International Students’ Day which commemorates the execution of nine Czechoslovakian students who fought against Nazi occupation.
