MANILA, Philippines – Manila Mayor Isko Moreno ordered the closure of seven bars near De La Salle University on Thursday night for violating a new city rule banning the sale of alcoholic drinks within 200 meters of schools.
Moreno himself led the team of Manila City Hall personnel and police in the surprise inspection, coinciding with what is known as Happy Thursday—that time of the week when throngs of students and workers from the Taft area unwind in bars and similar establishments.
Seven bars were immediately closed, with signs reading: “Establishment closed for violation of city ordinances” posted on their structures.
The mayor said business owners must mend their violations before they could resume operations.
De La Salle University students welcomed this move, affirming that this will redound to the safety and security of the students and city folk. (RAF/LMO)
