MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the closure of all Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) gaming activities, including licenses and franchises.
In a video message posted on the Presidential Communications Operations Office Facebook page late Friday night (July 26), Duterte announced the closure of “all gaming schemes” due to “massive corruption.”
“Pending investigation… all gaming activities, gambling, that got their franchise from government through PCSO are, as of today, suspended or terminated because of massive corruption,” Duterte said in the video message.
Police and military were then instructed to remove all PCSO lotteries and games, including Small Town Lottery (STL) and Peryahan ng Bayan, within 24 hours after the announcement.
Duterte cited “massive corruption” as ground for the closure, adding that the order includes courts that “repeatedly issued injunctions to paralyze government and to allow corruption to thrive.”
The President also expressed his wishes to close all forms of gambling in the country. He later added that he will need to “confer with leaders of Congress” before making his decision. (HGBH/LMO)
